Matt Patterson Rotarian of the DayMatt Patterson was the Rotarian of the Day. His guest was Tom Talbert, MD. Dr. Tom is working with a new treatment clinic that deals with opioid addiction, what used to be known as a Methadone Clinic. The opioid addiction is a real scourge in this country. Over 30,000 young people overdose every year. Many have lost jobs, families, friends, and health as they spend $500 or more a week on their habits. Before becoming associated with the clinic Dr. Tom did a lot of research. He found that many saw the Methadone clinics as a crutch, which trades one addiction for another. Dependency and addiction are different things, and those with dependency are not necessarily addicts. Addiction is caused by a mental disorder. We have a pleasure / reward system that is built into our brains. 10% to 15% of the popluation have a disorder that makes this process out of control. It is primarily inherited, and if both parents have the gene for addiction disorder, a child will have 75% chance of developing addiction. It is not a moral choice, but a mental disorder that must be treated as such. Craving something is a normal thing, but an addiction can develop, so methadone allows the treatment of the craving and disorder without giving a feeling of being high. Combined with counseling, patients can recover and break the cycle of pleasure / reward system of drug use.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself to the Burkburnett community as the superintendent of the Burkburnett Independent School District.
I am excited to be a part of such an innovative district dedicated to preparing students for their future. I grew up in Stephenville, Texas and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sports Studies from Tarleton State University in 1995. I have been in education for over 20 years as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, campus principal and superintendent. I have been married to my wife Anita since 1992. We have two daughters, Alexa who is a freshman in college and Cate who is a freshman at Burkburnett High School. I am passionate about the role I play in the lives of students and in the education process. I believe education is in a state of transformation that will better prepare students to be citizens in a world that does not yet exist. By developing skills such as creativity, collaboration and the ability to reason, Burkburnett graduates will enter the world with the tools necessary to be successful in their chosen field. I look forward to the strengthening relationships with students, parents, and community members in an effort to continually improve the education of the students of Burkburnett ISD.
In November 2015 the citizens of Burkburnett ISD showed their dedication to the community by investing in the future. A bond of $47.1 million was approved to renovate current facilities and construct a new 75,000 square foot elementary campus. Construction will begin in 2016 and when completed the new facilities will benefit the Burkburnett community for generations to come.
Thank you for your continued support of Burkburnett ISD.

What is the P.I. Project?
The P.I. Project is a transitional living program for emancipated foster youth. The goal of the PI project is to assist these young adults in learning basic life skills that will prepare them for independent living. Phased In will provide housing, education, medical care and life training through an 18 month program currently sponsored by the North Texas Dream Center. Through the combined partnership of the church, the community, and the State of Texas, the P.I. Project will embrace these youth who were never adopted to ensure that these young adults achieve self-sufficiency and stability. Finally, the P.I Project will provide the most vital and missing dynamic in the lives of these young adults – Family.
